Zum Beispiel kann die Aktivierung bestimmter Gesichtsmuskeln entsprechende emotionale Reaktionen bewirken bzw. vorhandene emotionale Reaktionen abschwächen oder verstärken. Ein Forscher möchte seine Hypothese zu diesem Thema überprüfen und hat deshalb eine experimentelle Studie geplant, die er wie im Folgenden beschrieben durchführt. Aus einem Telefonbuch werden 300 Probanden rekrutiert. Diese werden danach nach dem Zufallsprinzip in drei Gruppen aufgeteilt. Alle Gruppen haben die Aufgabe verschiedene Cartoons hinsichtlich ihres Humorgehaltes auf einer Skala von 0 bis 10 zu beurteilen, wobei 0 „überhaupt nicht lustig“ und 10 „sehr lustig“ entspricht. Die erste Gruppe soll bei der Beurteilung der Cartoons den Stift mit den Lippen festhalten, die zweite Gruppe mit den Zähnen. Die Probanden der dritten Gruppe sollen dagegen den Stift wie üblich mit einer Hand festhalten. Auf diese Weise aktiviert der Versuchsleiter den Lachmuskel bei den Probanden der zweiten Gruppe und erwartet, dass diese Probanden die Cartoons am positivsten beurteilen.
