Dem Forscher steht eine kleine Probandenstichprobe von 15 etwa gleichaltrigen Probanden zur Verfügung. In einer Vorhermessung misst der Forscher mittels eines Kurzfragebogens die Ausprägung der Ängstlichkeit der Versuchspersonen. Hinsichtlich dieser Werte werden die Versuchspersonen drei experimentellen Bedingungen zugeordnet (sozialer Kontakt mit einer fremden, jedoch freundlichen Person vs. Sozialer Kontakt mit einem Hund vs. keinerlei sozialer Kontakt). Vorher wurde außerdem kontrolliert, dass bei keinem der Probanden eine Angst vor Hunden vorliegt. Im nächsten Schritt der Untersuchung induziert der Forscher seinen Versuchspersonen Angst. Danach dürfen die Probanden entsprechend ihrer zugeordneten Bedingung für einige Minuten den sozialen Kontakt in Anspruch nehmen.
