Im Rahmen eines Projektes in der Stressforschung soll diese Annahme untersucht werden. An der Studie nehmen 30 Versuchspersonen teil. Da davon ausgegangen wird, dass die Stressreaktion auch vom Ausmaß des Neurotizismus abhängig ist, wird in der Vorhermessung die Ausprägung des Neurotizismus der Probanden anhand eines Persönlichkeitstests gemessen. Aufgrund dieser Werte werden die Probanden im nächsten Schritt der Untersuchung verschiedenen experimentellen Bedingungen zugeteilt. Allen Probanden wird ein Dokumentarfilm über ein schmerzhaftes Beschneidungsritual an männlichen Jugendlichen eines australischen Ureinwohnerstammes dargeboten. Die Hintergründe des Filmes werden variiert. Einem Teil der Personen wird der Film aus einer distanzierten wissenschaftlichen Perspektive präsentiert. Die Operation werde nach den Kommentaren der Wissenschaftler in dem Film sehr vorsichtig und kompetent ausgeführt. In der Variante des Filmes, die der zweiten Gruppe präsentiert wird, würden laut Kommentator die Jugendlichen durch ältere Männer beruhigt und erlebten das Ritual als erfreuliches Ereignis. Die dritte Variante des Filmes wird dem dritten Teil der Probanden dargeboten. In dieser Version der Dokumentation wurde die Schmerzhaftigkeit und Gewalttätigkeit des Rituals betont. Als Indikator für die physiologische Stressreaktion wird die Hautleitfähigkeit der Filmzuschauer nach der Darbietung des Filmes erfasst.
