Die Ergebnisse vieler Studien zeigen, dass besonders Stress die Leistung vermindert. Durch verschiedene stressbedingte Situationen wird das menschliche Stresshormon Cortisol ausgeschüttet. In einer Studie wird der Einfluss des Cortisols auf die deklarative (hippokampusabhängige) Gedächtnisleistung untersucht. An einer Studie nehmen 2 Seminargruppen mit jeweils 26 Studierenden teil. In einer Vorhermessung sollen sich alle Probanden innerhalb von 5 Minuten eine Wörterliste einprägen und diese danach wiedergeben. Es wird die Anzahl der korrekt wiedergegebenen Wörter ermittelt. Danach erhalten die Teilnehmer der ersten Seminargruppe Vitamin C als Placebo, während die andere Seminargruppe Cortison verabreicht bekommt, welches durch den menschlichen Körper schnell absorbiert und innerhalb einer Stunde in Cortisol umgewandelt wird. Eine Stunde danach sollen sich die Probanden wiederum innerhalb von 5 Minuten eine andere Wortliste einprägen und die gemerkten Wörter im Anschluss reproduzieren.
